Microsoft ends Windows 7 support

Windows 7 Logo - No longer Supported?

It’s Windows XP all over again. Once again, support for an older operating system is being pulled by Microsoft this Valentine’s Day. It means that although any Windows 7 computer will still run, it will no longer have security updates or patches, becoming less and less secure as more time passes.

What are your options? Well, as usual when companies pull support for older devices, you either have to upgrade the software if possible (and Windows 10 will work on some Windows 7 computers) and at a cost, or replace the system with something new. Microsoft even suggest, “we recommend you move to a new Windows 10 PC”!

Do nothing is the other option, and if, like our laptop that runs our laser your computer is not connected to the internet, then there’s no real issue.

We’ve had countless webcams, scanners and printers that worked perfectly well, but wouldn’t work on newer operating systems because the manufacturers pulled support, and subsequently were thrown out.

The environmental impact of this has a toll, as a lot of systems that do not otherwise need to be upgraded and work perfectly well will now be replaced by many corporations.

There is a small offset to this in that newer operating systems apparently have a better energy efficiency than older ones, and with the drive to higher use of cloud computing, there are further advantages for energy saving. Let’s hope those old computers are properly disposed of and recycled.

End of Windows 7, end of compatible computer equipment?

Windows 7 has had a 10 year life, with the still current windows 10 released 6 years later. Anyone though about all the computers out there still using XP?
